Our Craft

At Arihant, craft is not a trend. It’s a rhythm, a patient, meticulous process carried through generations of quiet mastery. Below, we invite you to step into our workshop and discover how each cashmere creation comes to life, slowly, beautifully, exactly as it has been done for ages.

Hanking
We begin with stillness. Delicate cashmere yarn is wound by hand into loose hanks – preserving its softness and preparing it for the journey ahead. (In a world of shortcuts, we choose patience. The yarn rests in gentle coils, rather than taut spools, until it’s ready to be woven.)

Warping
Next comes alignment and purpose. Long strands of yarn are carefully stretched and aligned on a warping frame. This step lays the foundation for the design, determining the length and structure of the textile to come. It’s precision work- the warp must be perfect to yield a flawless weave.

Beaming
The organized warp threads are then rolled onto the loom’s beam with even, loving tension. This ensures that when weaving begins, each thread dances in harmony. An evenly beamed warp is like the steady heartbeat of our loom, assuring consistency in the fabric.

Drafting & Denting
In this intricate phase, every single warp thread is guided through the loom’s heddles and reeds according to our design. This “drafting” defines the pattern and density of the weave – be it a classic twill or an ornate diamond motif. It’s painstaking, eye-guided work: our artisans know that a well-drafted loom is the canvas for artistry.

Bobbining (Preparing the Weft)
While the loom is being dressed with warp, we prepare the weft – the yarn that will weave through. Cashmere yarn is spun onto bobbins by hand. We choose the shades and fiber blends per design, sometimes even hand-dyeing small batches for a perfect hue. These bobbins of colored cloud-like yarn stand ready to shoot through the loom’s shuttle.

Weaving
Now the true magic unfolds. Our master weaver sends the shuttle flying across the loom, weft thread in tow, and a new fabric inch is born. With each pass, the pattern emerges – perhaps a subtle herringbone, perhaps an intricate jacquard. This is a slow dance of human and machine: foot pedals, skilled hands, and watchful eyes working in concert. The room is quiet, save for the rhythmic click-clack of the loom. Over days and weeks, a masterpiece grows. In this step, time almost pauses – weaving by hand can never be rushed.

Mending
Once a piece is off the loom, our artisans pore over it inch by inch. Any tiny irregularity is deftly corrected with needle and thread. This is where our quality control truly shines: no machine can replicate the care of a human eye and hand. A loose weave line, a skipped thread, we find and perfect it now, ensuring the textile is absolutely impeccable.

Dyeing
(If applicable, for pieces dyed after weaving) We employ a slow, artisanal dyeing process for certain pieces. The woven fabric is gently colored in small batches, allowing pigments to fully penetrate the cashmere fibers. We use eco-friendly dyes that yield rich, lasting hues without harsh chemicals. The fabric is then carefully air-dried, to preserve its softness.

Edge Finishing
The finishing touch is where function meets artistry. Depending on the design, we finish edges with hand-knotted tassels, delicate fringe, or sew on borders (perhaps silk or suede). Our signature finish is the jali – a traditional hand-interlacing that creates a subtle openwork border, often adorned with tassels. Each edge is completed entirely by hand, one tassel at a time, one stitch at a time, giving the piece its distinctive character.

Final Touches – Checking
Before a piece leaves our workshop, it undergoes one last loving inspection. Every piece is carefully checked for quality with eyes, hands, and experience. No machine can match this level of care.

Final Touches – Pressing
We steam-press the cashmere lightly, which relaxes the fibers and lets the weave bloom into its final softness.

Final Touches – Labeling
We then label each item with our insignia as well as any custom monogram requested, with care, carrying the story of its making from our workshop in Kathmandu to the world.

This is our process, a labor of love that marries tradition with personal dedication. The result is more than a product- it’s a tactile experience, a heritage story woven into fabric.
