Why Ply Matters More Than Most People Think

One of the most common questions we receive from designers is:
"What ply should we choose?"

The answer depends entirely on how the piece is intended to be used.

At Arihant Collection, our cashmere collections are handwoven, allowing us to create everything from lightweight throws to substantial blankets across a range of ply constructions. The choice isn't about limitations. It's about creating the exact feel, weight, and performance a project requires.

In cashmere, ply refers to the number of yarn strands twisted together to form a finished thread. Changing the ply dramatically influences the weight, structure, warmth, and overall character of the textile.

A mountain lodge, a coastal residence, and a luxury hotel suite may all require different cashmere constructions, even when using the same color palette. The right ply helps determine how the textile performs and feels within the space.

Think of ply as a design tool:

• 2-Ply (Lightweight & Flowing): Ideal for delicate layering, transitional seasons, and spaces where you want an airy, effortless feel.
• 4-Ply to 6-Ply (Structured & Mid-weight): Offers greater durability, definition, and a more substantial presence for throws and coverlets.
• 8-Ply to 10-Ply (Dense & Ultra-Luxurious): Provides exceptional warmth, rich texture, and a deeply comforting feel.

When designing a space, color and pattern are often the first considerations.

But ply determines how a client actually experiences the textile day after day. Two pieces can use the same cashmere yarn and color palette yet feel completely different because of their construction.

Often, the details that aren't immediately visible become the ones clients appreciate most once they start living with the product.
